Sally Becker first arrived in Bosnia in May 1993. The city of Mostar was divided and the Bosnian Muslims had been under siege for almost three months, trapped on the east side of the River Neretva, between the Croats and the Serbs. Sally approached Dr Ivan Bagaric, head of the Croat Health Authorities to ask for permission to evacuate a child in urgent need of medical help and was granted permission to evacuate all the injured children and their families from the besieged hospital. On 26th August 1993, she borrowed an ambulance and set off across the front line.
